About
After eight years as a biologist, I dropped out of a Ph.D. program at U.C. Berkeley to pursue a career in writing. Since then, I’ve written about science, medicine, and ethics for publications including Slate, Scientific American and Discover Magazine. I was also the founding editor-in-chief of GeneBites, an outlet for articles written by graduate students about discoveries in genetics.
For several years, I worked as a science writer and editor at the National Human Genome Research Institute, which is part of the NIH. I chose to leave the federal government in February 2025 to continue writing about important issues like health equity (as I covered for Slate shortly after leaving).
Currently, I’m a freelance science journalist interested in a wide variety of stories about science, medicine, technology, and their impacts on our planet and society. I also occasionally write fiction and am based in Oakland, California.
